Orienteering Taranaki is organising a training camp for club members for the weekend of 17th and 18th January 2025.

This camp is aimed at club members already running orange or red level courses.

The camp will include coaching sessions and training runs at various maps in the Whanganui/Bulls region.

We recommend staying in Whanganui . Based on our research of availability and accommodation choices, we recommend taking a look at Whanganui Seaside Holiday Park, although you are welcome to stay where it best suits you. Please note it is Wellington Anniversary weekend so we recommend booking accomodation early.

The number of places on the camp will be limited to ensure a good coach/participant ratio. For this reason we expect anyone registered to attend both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will include some night orienteering training.

A detailed programme will be sent to particpants in December.

Please register below (one registration per person/family member please) There is no cost for the camp itself.  Places are limited so please let us know asap if your plans change after registering.

Why should you come:
Being a good orienteer is a combination of making great intuitive decisions and of being a disciplined navigational technician. The former can be developed through time on the map, but the latter is best developed in a coaching environment.

At the end of a coaching weekend, you should have become familiar with a“ToolBox” of techniques and equally importantly learnt which to use and when (even when your brain is short of oxygen). Which technique on any leg will give you better speed and which will lower the risk.
Techniques that will be covered will include:
The RACE method (Route choice; Attack point; Control; Exit)
Course and Fine compass work and which to use when.
Aiming off effectively
Simplification
Linearisation
Route Choice selection
and more.

The head coaches are Yvette and Rachael Baker. Yvette is a veteran orienteer who as an elite won two world championship (WOC) events for Britain. Her daughter Rachael is a current NZ elite and has recently returned from UK where she was coaching in Yorkshire.

Will I come back a better orienteer: Absolutely!
